ALLERGIES
Over the last decade allergies in the urban United
States have dramatically increased. This can be attributed to our
environment becoming increasingly toxic and polluted, and the refinement
of and additives in our foods. The hometown with clean air, pure
water, and home-grown, nutrient-packed produce has not only become
a rarity, but close to extinct.
Food and environmental allergies are at epidemic
proportions. Many of us have an inherited genetic predisposition
to food allergies. Allergic histories often can be found in both
parents and siblings. When both parents are allergic, 67% of their
children are allergic too. In only one parent is allergic then we
expect 33% of the children to have allergies.
Food allergies are often caused by decreased secretion
of digestive enzymes, causing the inadequate breakdown of our food,
especially proteins. Protein particles remain large, and when they
are absorbed our bodies frequently recognize them as being foreign
(just like a virus or a bacteria) and an allergic response occurs
by our immune system. An immune system allergic response of our respiratory
system may also occur when we are exposed to pollens, molds, or environmental
pollutants.
Signs and Symptoms: Respiratory allergens,
such as dust, pollen, or animal dander, often cause irritated, watery
eyes, sneezing, runny nose, and congestion.
Food Allergy Symptoms: Gastrointestinal:
ulcerative colitis, ulcers, irritable colon, poor absorption, diarrhea,
celiac disease, and canker sores.
Urinary Tract: bed-wetting and chronic
bladder infections.
Mental/Emotional: Confusion, seizures,
hyperactivity, poor concentration, irritability, depression, and
anxiety.
Immune System: frequent ear infections,
chronic infections.
Joints: pain, low back pain, bursitis.
Skin: Acne, eczema, hives, itchy skin,
rash.
Respiratory: Asthma, chronic bronchitis,
wheezing.
Miscellaneous: Swelling, fatigue, headache,
low blood sugar, migraines, food cravings, weight gain or loss (unintentional),
fluctuations in body weight.
Lifestyle and Dietary Recommendations:
Environmental allergies:
- Air Filters
- Remove rugs
- No Pets
- Clean often – to be free of dust
- Avoid Stuffed toys on the beds
- Wash all bed linen weekly and dry in high heat
to kill mites.
Lifestyle:
- Drink 10 glasses of clean water daily.
- Avoid any known allergens - Food or environmental.
- Eat Ginger: it is a natural antihistamine and
decongestant.
- Magnesium: Eat Spinach, avocados, barley, Quinoa,
Almonds, Sunflower and pumpkin seeds, CHOCOLATE are all good sources
of magnesium. Magnesium can help to relieve constricted airways
in the lungs and reduce bronchial discomfort associated with allergies.
- Quercetin: Eat cabbage, garlic, apples, grapes,
cranberries, pears, onions. All are rich in quercetin which reduces
inflammation and prevents the release of histamine, which causes
congestion and blocks allergic reactions to pollens.
- Vitamin C: Eat cabbage, oranges, strawberries,
bell and red peppers, tangerines, mandarins, kiwi fruit, and potatoes.
Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine capable of blocking the effect
of inflammatory substances that some people produce in response
to allergens.
