CANCER PREVENTION
Cancers are mutations that result from one or more exposure(s) to carcinogenic
materials, or periods of profound stress. Cancer is a response to abnormal,
constant stress. Carcinogenic materials and chronic stress can damage the genetic
code of cells resulting in cancer. Environmental or other chronic stress on
tissues or organs increases the likelihood of cancer developing. Under conditions
of high sugar, cancer is more likely to flourish. (Think of your diet.)
Genetically you may also be predisposed to cancer. It is difficult to find
a family tree these days that does not have at least one family member that
has died from cancer.
Even though all of us are producing cancer cells everyday, our healthy immune
system protects us by destroying these “foreign” invaders. When
our immune system is compromised due to chronic stress, cigarette smoke, or
nutritional deficiencies, it may fail to recognize the foreign invaders allowing
cancer cells to
multiply. Once cancer cells multiply it is difficult for the immune system
to contain, or destroy it.
Conventional Treatment:
Chemotherapy: Though there is improvement with some chemotherapies being more
cell specific, there is also a large amount of other cellular death, creating
a multitude of side effects, and profound effects on the quality of ones life.
Radiation: Though target specific, it is still not limited to cancer cell
death alone. Destruction of other healthy cells again leads to multiple side
effects and organ dysfunction.
Surgery: Surgery is the best option for cancer when possible. The odds of
surgery being successful increase when cancer is small and confined. Cancer
screening is probably the tool that has the biggest impact on cancer survival
allowing cancer to be detected early.
V.O. has survived cancer three times due to early detection.
Parotid gland cancer was survived by early medical intervention when her
ear wouldn’t
clear from the pressure after an airplane flight. Breast cancer discovered
by her annual mammogram and required surgery only. Colon cancer was survived
with surgery only when she went for a screening colonoscopy because she turned
50. Seven years later she remains cancer free – playing tennis, golf,
and enjoying life with her family and friends. Early screening has been a real
life-saving gift for V.O.
Lifestyle and Diet Recommendations:
- It is recommended that all of us receive an annual physical.
- For women,
beginning at age 40, get an annual mammogram (or sooner if family history).
- For
all sexually-active women, remember your annual pap smear.
- For men, beginning
at age 40, prostate exams should be done annually.
- For men and women, beginning
at age 50 (or sooner if family history), get an initial colonoscopy screening
followed up with additional screenings as prescribed by your doctor.
- Exercise
daily. Many types of cancers can be avoided by regular exercise (Colon cancer,
Breast and Prostate cancers, and Ovarian cancer).
- Eat a diet that includes
daily multiple servings of fruits and vegetables, preferably organic. Your
plates of food should look like a colorful artist’s
palette. (High anti-oxidant content).
- Do not smoke, and avoid second-hand
smoke. Another great reason to quit!
- If you are a normal weight, maintain
it, and if you are overweight, lose the excess weight. Breast and prostate
cancer have been associated with being overweight. (Estrogen is stored in
fat).
- Drink 8-10 glasses of pure water daily.
- Practice stress reduction. Yoga
and/or meditation are good choices.
