VARICOSE VEINS
Varicose veins are caused by defects in the wall that causes dilation of the
vein and damages the valves in the veins. These bulging veins are called varicose
veins. Varicose veins are tortuous, superficial veins generally in the lower
extremities that may be associated with discomfort, aching, pain, or fatigue.
Edema (swelling), discoloration, and even ulcers (sores) may develop in the
lower legs.
Varicose veins affect nearly 50% of middle-aged adults and women are affected
four times as frequently as men. Overweight individuals are at a greater risk,
which increases with age due to loss of tone and muscle mass, and greater weakening
of the walls of the vessels. Pregnancy may also cause the development of varicose
veins. You may have a genetic predisposition of weakness of the veins. Also,
long periods of standing may aggravate this condition.
Diet and Lifestyle:
Increase fiber in your diet to prevent straining with defecation.
Use support hose (available for both men and women) to support your lower legs
if you must be on your feet for long periods of time.
Take frequent walks to “massage” your lower legs with muscle contractions.
Maintain a normal weight.
Eat fruits and vegetables rich in bioflavonoid that are needed for blood vessel
health. Eat dark skinned berries daily.
